Network Troubleshooting Guide

This is a general guide on some steps to take if your having problems connecting to the internet or with your network. This troubleshooting guide includes a number of tools, all these are free to download and use.

Step 1

Try resetting your modem/wireless if your having trouble connecting to the internet. Make sure you plug the modem/wireless out at the plug and leave it for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Plug it back in and try connecting again.

Step 2

Make sure you username and password is right (if you have to enter one).

Step 3

If its a wireless that your connecting to and your connection is intermittent, then you may want to try and change the channel your signal is sent on. To do this go to you start menu and go to run (type run if your on vista) then type cmd in the box and a black screen will appear. Then you want to type ipconfig and look at the default gateway:

ipconfig

Take the default gateway number and enter that into a browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome etc). You will get the wireless configuration menu. Find the wireless section that contain the channel (this will difer for all router so just look around). Then change the channel to a different number as seen below, save and try connecting again:

Step 4

If your on Windows XP try running the Winsockfix through. Download and follow it through from HERE.

Step 5

Try running virus/spyware scans through just incase a malicious program is stopping you from accessing the internet. You can view our removal guides HERE and HERE.

Step 6

If you have recently been running an anti virus program and have either removed or updated it and since then your computer has had connection issues try running a removal tool through. Go to Google and search for your antivirus removal tool. For example if you have had norton antivirus on you would search for norton removal tool, download it and run it through.

Step 7

Try a different internet browser. If your using Internet Explorer for example, try connecting with Firefox or Google Chrome and see if that works. (You can get different browsers from our Downloads section HERE).

Step 8

If your using a wireless but have a laptop or another computer that connects using a wire, see if that computer works, if so it may be a hardware problem with your wireless.

NOTE

If you do think that your modem/wireless is to blame and it is one from your internet provider, try ringing them and asking for a new box to be sent out. Most internet providers will do this for free.
