How to Disable UAC




This is a quick guide on how to disable a feature which appears in both Windows Vista and 7. User Account Control is used when an unknown program is run. It displays a small dialogue box, usually always dimming the screen, which expects the user to allow the program to run.

Step 1

When you run a program, you may see a small window pop up which requires your attention. An example of UAC is shown below. These differ between Windows Vista and 7 (button caption changed from 'Continue' to 'Yes') but have the same function.

First, click Start, type msconfig and press Enter.

Step 2

You may need to Continue when the UAC pops up here. After this you will see the following window. Click the Tools tab.

Once the Tools tab is open, scroll to the bottom of the list and find the following item: Disable UAC

Once selected, click the Launch button in the bottom right hand side of the window. This will disable UAC.

You may need to restart your computer, but to confirm, you will see the following message pop up near your notification area.

If you see this message, User Account Control has sucesfully been stopped. If at any time you want to re-enable UAC, go back to the beginning of this step and select Enable UAC from the list.
