Computer Making Noises
This guide will tell you what to check if your computer is making noises. The noises you may hear could vary from a pop to a grinding noise or your CPU fan running at 110%.
| Loud fan |
If you fan is always really loud there are 2 things you want to think about first. Is it loud from when you first turn it on? Or does it get louder the longer your on it? If it is loud from when you first turn it on then it could be a setting in your BIOS - To access the BIOS keep tapping Esc, F1, F2 and Del key at startup. You should then be presented with an options screen, navigate to the fan settings and change it to a lower value/speed (dont change the value to low as thins could casue your computer to overheat).
If you computer fan/CPU fan gradually gets louder then this could be casued by the CPU been overloaded. If you have lots of programs running or leave you computer on all day then turn it of every now and then and shut down those programs you dont need open in the background. If you have a laptop make sure none of the vents are covered. You can also try removing any dust or muck from the fan as this could be a cause of the noise.

| Grinding/scraping noise | A scraping or grinding noise is usually a wire touching a fan. If you open the side of your case and make sure all wires are well away from any fans.
|
| Popping noise | This is more than likely going to be your power supply popping. Make sure all wires are seated correctly into the motherboard. Try changing the power cable for another and if nessacery try replacing the power supply. If the power supply keeps popping (even after been replaced) this is probably caused by a faulty motherboard.
|
| Rattling noise | A rattling noise is usually a worn out fan/bearing. Older fans use plastic internals which gradually wear out after use. If this is the case then try replaing the fan. |
